Meghalaya

Meghalaya, meaning abode of clouds, is one of the most scenic states in Northeast India, known for its high rainfall, misty hills, and dense forests. The state is home to vibrant indigenous cultures, especially the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia tribes, who follow matrilineal traditions. Its unique living root bridges, crafted over generations using aerial roots of rubber trees, are a UNESCO-tentative marvel. Meghalaya is also celebrated for its music and rock culture, natural caves like Siju and Mawsmai, and eco-tourism.

Tourist attractions include Cherrapunji and Mawsynram—two of the wettest places on Earth—along with Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake, and Dawki with its crystal-clear river. Shillong, the capital, is often called the Scotland of the East and has a charming colonial legacy. The state has also produced renowned personalities such as Arundhati Roy’s mother Mary Roy (an educationist from the region), and celebrated musician Lou Majaw. Meghalaya stands out for its balance between cultural tradition and natural beauty.
